Upgrade any PC you have to at least Windows 2000 or XP Pro! Windows 98 an ME is far from secure and the salon workers have to much control with the Windows 98 or ME OS. You MUST upgrade to Windows 2000 or XP Pro to create truly secure users so the workers can only work. They should only have access to Helios, Solarsoft, and to shutdown anything else should tell them Access Denied. None of my clients use Windows 98 especially ME, I refuse to even install ME and you should too. Spend the money on Windows 2000 or XP Pro and lock those PC’s down.

Pay attention to what John (Solarsoft Guru) said “Networking between Win 9X/ME and W2K/XP systems can be problematic and random. Due to W2K/XP having a much more secure networking system in place, there are times when 9X/ME machines will not see and share drives off of W2K. We have had several customers who have been able to share between the systems and some who have tried everything under the sun, with no luck.”

I have been consulting for 8 years, I will only use 98 if the customer adamantly refuses to upgrade and it’s an office situation and you rely on that machine to make money. That also means no AMD spend the money on reliable products like Intel, cheaper products never work right. I never have and never will administer a client with a Windows ME machine, 99% of my clients have upgraded to Windows 2000 or XP Pro. Since these PC’s are your Point of Sale / life blood if they go down you make no money. I firmly believe that Windows 2000 is the best bet. Since you are networking in 98 or ME your rebooting almost any time you change the network settings. If the network cable was unplugged by an employee in 98 you have to reboot, not in 2000 or XP Pro. You rarely reboot in Windows 2000 or XP Pro that alone is worth the upgrade. So I recommend that you install Windows 2000 or XP Pro, DO NOT USE THE UPGRADE FROM THE WINDOEWS 98 GUI!!! Upgrading will leave behind old windows garbage. You can buy the upgrade CD just back up your data and boot from your shiny new CD. Windows 2000 or XP Pro will find the old OS allowing you to upgrade. Boot from the CD, chose to format and reinstall (AFTER BACKING EVERYTHING UP!!!) this is the only way to go.[ This Message was edited by: Poohberry on 2002-12-06 14:03 ]
