Networking between Win 9X/ME and W2K/XP systems can be problematic and random. Due to W2K/XP having a much more secure networking system in place, there are times when 9X/ME machines will not see and share drives off of W2K. We have had several customers who have been able to share between the systems and some who have tried everything under the sun, with no luck.
I usually recommend trying it, and if it doesn't work, then spend a little while trying to fix it (not hours though). Once you have exausted yourself, go ahead and upgrade the older system. An upgraded OS (or better yet, new system) is usually worth the price to avoid the headache and problems associated with making two generations of OS work together reliably. Of course, that boils down to how much do you value your time
