Good Morning Everyone:
I trust everyone ha a nice Friday night ……..
Today we are going begin to look at the terms used and definitions.
Let’s begin with some that have a tendency to fool us..
Active Ingredient: This term is used and also sometimes seen by the name.... Active Principle:
This means it is an ingredient with a “treatment value” it is therapeutic or beneficial in
toning the skin, or healing the skin or soothing it or peeling the skin....
Active Ingredients will be listed as such…….. example: I just grabbed a couple of products from my daughters counter I see a skin crème she uses 3 times a week…. reading the label In bold letters it says Active Ingredient: Benzoyl Peroxide 5%.. then a heading… Other Ingredients than a list continues…… another one a face wash Again we see Active Ingredient: Salicylic Acid 2%….. Then another list titled Ingredients, and a new list continues.. (Follow?) …..
We need to be aware of active ingredients … knowing what ingredients are listed on the label is good but knowing what they do is very important to us..
We can better help our guests and ourselves pick which one is right for us when we know what it is that we are about to put on our skin. Agree?
Now go check out a few products on your shelves…..or in your cabinets, see how many have an active ingredient..
Lets do one more this morning …… OK?
Acid: when an acid is used in a cosmetic formulation it is there to neutralize the substance which otherwise maybe would be too alkaline.
A lot of acids are also in a product to exfoliate the skin or used to peel the skin such as an AHA.. (Alpha Hydroxy Acids)
……a property like hyaluronic acid has its own thing going on example : Hyaluronic acid holds water so tightly in our cells it almost becomes like a gel..( certain acids will be a very very low percentage rate in some of the products) it’s important we see where they fall on with the listed ingredient print out on the labels.
Acids are used these days so much in products for our skin we see them in virtually 4 out of 10 products on the skin care market.. We will explore some of the acids listed on labels later on.. but for now it is important you understand that it is there in the product to neutralize it.
Remember crèmes, gels and lotions with a low acid level will be very irritating to the skin.. ( this is why it will peel the skin or exfoliate it)..
The word Acid is used to refer to the pH level of the substance ranging from 0 for the highest acidic substance to around a 6.9 for the least acidic.
Go see if you have products containing Acids.. AHAs.Betas.. it will be listed on the label..
It will surprise you how much these are being used these days..
This is what we were talking about before about Dermo-Cosmetics and Cosmeceuticals bridging the gap between pharmaceuticals and cosmetics…
Have a great day……
We will talk more later..
