I wish there was some wonderfully flowery history about where the term “essential” came from with regards to essential oils… If you refer to the other thread where we were discussing essential oils you will notice my comments regarding the fact that not all essential oils are “oils” rather a combination of aldehydes, terpenes, ketones, phenols, Oxides, oils, esters…etc… The compounds are derived from 1000’s of sources and can be isolated via one of 8 or 9 different techniques including distillation, extraction, absorption, maceration to name a few.
The term “essentials” or “essential oils” were first used as a description by perfumers to describe the “essential” ingredients needed to make fragrances.
